  2. Subject: TAB: "Feel" (Big Star)

  4. Here it is. The kickoff from the first album by the forgotten classic
  5. rock and roll band. The Posies did a cover of this on a 7" once
  6. (backed with Chris Bell's apres-Big Star "I Am The Cosmos") and they
  7. got it down cold. The *voices* were the same. Anyway, a few notes:
  8.  
  9. 1) What we have here in this song is a *lot* of guitars. Four, if I
  10.     count right. Because of this, I lose track of some of the guitars
  11.     in various points of the song (e.g., I don't know where the
  12.     acoustic is during the verses). I'm not making stuff up, so if it
  13.     looks like a guitar is missing in my transcription, it may be that
  14.     I can't pick it out. Which may mean that it's not there, but it
  15.     may not.
  16. 2) I was torn between two different versions of the opening/main
  17.     riff, but I think that both are actually played. The easy-to-play
  18.     version is on electric and the harder-to-play version is on
  19.     acoustic. I think. BTW, this riff has been used everywhere, from
  20.     just about any blues song (it's a fairly standard tunaround) to
  21.     Buddy Holly's "That'll Be the Day" to Cream's "I'm So Glad" to
  22.     Jesus Jones' "Right Here Right Now."
  23. 3) The intro speeds up. I don't know why. But it starts out
  24.     moderately slow the first time through the riff and then picks up
  25.     the second time through. I think it may also speed up at the end,
  26.     but I can't tell. Do what you feel. Pun intended.
  27. 4) I'm not entirely sure what the descending bit at the very end of
  28.     the riff is (right before the verses). This may be right or this
  29.     may just be an approximation. It happens to quickly for any major
  30.     damage, anyway, so you might just want to barrel through it.
  31. 5) I believe that this is sung by Chris Bell, although I supposed it
  32.     is possible that Alex Chilton's singing the chorus. I also think
  33.     Chilton's playing rhythm and Bell's playing lead guitar. In case
  34.     you care.
  35. 6) As with a lot of songs that Chris Bell sings on, I can't figure
  36.     out what the hell he's saying for a bit. I have difficulty with
  37.     the first line. If anybody can help, I'd appreciate it.
  38. 7) There is only one verse and one chorus. Lyrically, anyway. They're
  39.     just repeated throughout.
  40. 8) I have no idea what kind of effect is on the guitar 3, but it sure
  41.     does sound cool. It makes each chord during the verse sound like
  42.     it's being scooped up, but it's definitely not a whammy-bar-type
  43.     technique. Maybe some sort of wah-wah or flanger?
  44. 9) If I could figure out the great backing vocals, I probably still
  45.     wouldn't be able to transcribe them here.
  46. 10) I've written out the part for the horns in the solo (not too hard)
  47.     but I've left out the saxophone solo and the electric piano. It's
  48.     mostly doing trills and shouldn't be too complex. I just can't be
  49.     bothered.
